Using podcasts to improve your life and self

You may already be across podcasts to catch up on your favourite radio show, political scandals or sports tipping, but did you know there is a whole world of information out there on mental health? Whether you are simply interested in how the brain works, or hearing unfiltered conversations with celebrities who struggle- these podcasts are both informative and entertaining.

 

Here I review some of my favourites.

 

The Savvy Psychologist with Dr. Ellen Hendrikson

Ellen’s podcast is a breath of fresh air. She uses a ‘no jargon’ approach to mix science and research with ‘quick and dirty’ tips to help you be your best self.

She hosts special guests, takes questions from listeners and keeps the conversation light and engaging. She covers a broad range of topics from beating performance anxiety to dealing with difficult people and everything in between! There are around 250 episodes on Spotify so make sure you delve into the back catalogue.

 

The Hilarious World of Depression with John Moe

John Moe is…hilarious. His podcast is tagged ‘one part stand-up comedy and one part therapy session’. He is a popular author and radio host, turning his talents to destigmatising depression. He interviews comedians and other celebrities about their experience with the black dog. His guests include Russell Brand, Wil Wheaton, John Greene and Andy Richter. They laugh about sticky situations and poor coping strategies, all normalising the experiences of people with depression.

 

Happier with Gretchen Rubin

You may know Gretchen as the author of the bestselling book ‘The Happiness Project’. Her podcast is an accessible companion to the book, providing manageable advice about happiness and habit development to this fun and engaging podcast. She has a huge back catalogue also- covering topics from favouritism in families to being more persuasive. She interviews many authors and often draws on literature for guidance and inspiration.

 

Hardcore Self-Help with Dr. Robert Duff 

Robert answers hard questions with zero psychobabble. He talks about real and raw subjects (erectile dysfunction, emotional cheating, toxic families…) often in a question and answer format. Listeners love guests he has on the show- especially his wife Joelle. They talk relationships, communication, family life…and everything in between. An informative and entertaining 1 hour of your day- perfect for that long commute home!

 

Not Another Anxiety Show with Kelli Walker

Yes- there are a lot of these around! Kelli’s podcast talks anxiety in all it’s forms and severity levels. She draws from her experience as a nurse, health and wellness coach and recovered agoraphobe! She offers practical tips from experts and other resources on her website to improve understanding of anxiety and most out of it’s clutches. She answers common but often unasked questions regarding intrusive thoughts and other taboo topics. Guests include Russ Harris- Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Guru. Worth a listen for anyone struggling with stress!

 

Broken Brain with Dhru Purohit

For those wanting something to sink your teeth into this podcast is packed with information to ‘biohack’ your life. Featuring interviews with top experts in the field of neuroplasticity, epigenetics and functional medicine, Dhru tells you what you need to take your brain to the next level. He covers a broad range of topics like supercharging your love life to sleeping for better brain health. Every episode is packed full of scientific information and practical tips. You will feel smarter after spending an hour with Dhru!

 

Try switching to a podcast just once a week to see the impact it makes on your day. Sure- it takes a little more energy than listening to your favourite jams- but the benefits just might surprise you!
